I had plans for the weekend too.... I had arranged to go to Yarndale in Skipton with friend for the village on Saturday, and had also said yes to a visit to Leeds for the day with friends Helen and Sarah on Sunday......... After much thought I'd decided that Nigel's mum needed a visit more than I needed to have a busy weekend so I put off Yarndale till next year, but thought a day eating great food in wonderful company in Leeds, something I'd never done would be fun........ trouble was Helen and Sarah had to cancel so I was left with a blank diary.........
We did have a back up plan for Sunday as it was the Masham Sheep fair too.... so after lunch at Sycamore Hall with Joan, we drove over to meet our friends Neil and Mandy to have a mooch round and have a look.... It was busy as usual, and we caught up with some more friends and breeders that we know, so all very sociable!.. The same Poll Dorset breeder who had won so many classes at Nidderdale had done the same at Masham so I took the opportunity to have a chat!
Mrs Gray from Goit Stock Farm in Burley in Wharfedale was talking to a couple of gentlemen, so when I caught her eye I apologized for interrupting, but just wanted to ask a quick question... I explained how I had come to have my 6 beautiful girls, and that I was going to look for a tup in the new year...... "Did she sell Poll Dorset tups?" "Yes" was the answer, and her prize winning Sheerling tup, in the pen next to us was for sale! ....... Well I hadn't expected that!
Oh he'll be worth a fortune with all his red rosettes I replied, as I'd been checking prices on the internet....... Prices for such an animal seemed to range from a minimum of £450 to several thousand for prize winners, so I knew that I'd have to start saving... So when I asked what she wanted for him, her reply floored me... she just wanted him to go to a good home and enjoy life, as he was related to too many of her stock, so her price reflected her needs rather than a true value... I simply couldn't believe my ears..... "Goodness me..... I'd just better get Nigel, but I think you've got yourself a sale!".. I found the others and blurted out what had been said..... "You'd better go back and say yes" said Nigel.. so I grabbed him and we made a very unexpected purchase! We'll go over next Saturday to collect him............. and as it turns out another friend has just bought 10 ewes as a trial, so he'll also be put to work immediately!! James must be keeping an eye on us!....... what an incredible set of circumstances to lead us to such a lovely animal.......
There will be pictures when we collect him.... I'm over the moon!
