As you may have read earlier, Douglas, our lovely new boy, had developed a limp, which we had first treated with an antibiotic and foot spray, and later with two anti-inflammatory injections, but although he was feeling better in himself, and putting his foot down a little more, he was still lifting his front right leg to walk around?
This morning we took him down to the barn with Peewee in tow to have a proper look again, and to keep him in on clean dry straw rather than in the field. Peewee and he get on very well, so she is with him for company... We had called into the surgery on Monday to have a quick chat with the vet, but thought it was time they took a look so the lovely Amy called in at the barn to examine him.
He was a little alarmed at someone he didn't know so we put his head in a halter, something that he is used to wearing at shows, and tied him up so that Amy could see what was going on.... she trimmed his foot, there was no foot rot, then she tested his muscles..... no there was no strain...... so we went back to his foot and looked a little deeper..... Ah.... once cleaned up he had a little split in the side of it and an infection had started at the bottom of it and had created a small abscess, not something that we would have been able to see.
Amy cleaned it out, trimmed it and washed his hoof in a solution and then put on a poultice, normally used on a horse, but the principle is the same to drawer out any infection..... this was then bandaged on and will remain in place for hours...........
and a note to my friend Ruth...... she had joked about the fact that I hadn't had him in a bandage yet....... and I had laughed, saying it had crossed my mind to use a crepe bandage on him already!!!!..... Well joking aside I hope it does the trick........ He was as good as gold....... with a nice treat on nuts after his ordeal... I'll keep you posted on his progress......... !
