Some couldn't care less,... as they've been gradually weened naturally, but this year Mitsie has been particularly vigilant.. loving Dixie with a tenderness that in previous years has been somewhat lacking... we've always joked about her having latchkey kids!...
..perhaps it was her difficult birth back in March when we had taken her to the vets at midnight on that bitterly cold night just before the snow hit with such gusto... or perhaps it was that she knew she had lost one lamb and was not going to loose the other under any circumstances.... anyway whatever the reason they have been inseparable..... until last night.
We had collected the two hamster sisters.. Dotty and Curley and the old Swaledale's lambs Misty and Sky, and had delivered them safely over to be reunited with Melody and the gang.. they had caused an uproar... and the noise had been deafening... so we'd left them to sort themselves out ....
We went over to the field near Redmire and got everyone into the yard, they were reluctant to be collected into the barn for sorting, too interested in the new grass and surroundings... We eventually rounded up Ollie, Sydney and the other boys as they needed to be separated from the ewes... we don't want any accidents... and then caught Dixie and Lupin.. who were also coming to share Melodies field and eventually bundled them all into the trailer...
We fished out the two youngsters first and then went to the other end of the field and unloaded the boys who were separated off... all went well, and while Nigel went off for 20 mins I sat with all the lambs under a tree and settled them all down together........ all except Dixie with Lupin in tow, who marched round the field and then stood by the gate crying and looking for Mitsie... Nigel returned, gave her a cuddle and she seemed to realise that there was a new gang to join...
This morning most were standing at the top of the field, with Dixie flirting at the gate with the boys next door.. they had their breakfast and then I walked them to the top of the field... gave each one a love and then left them eating the new grass....... all happy with Melody gently holding court... It is her field after all!
