Melody and her gang were some of the last so the water was rather horrible as they followed nearly 140 sheep..... but the effects are the same and their wool has developed a lovely crimp and is standing up soft and perky...... and Jonty has regained his adoration..... I must admit that last week he had developed a bit of a limp..... had had his feet trimmed which didn't help the situation, had also had a small injection to assist his recover all of which, including his dipping experience had resulted to a positive mistrust and filthy looks which can only be rivaled by Mitsie and Melody when they have their parts on!...... however this evening he is back to usual self, settling into his new favorite place in the elbow of where two rails meet...... he has a panoramic view of the whole field and all that is going on, and he sits chewing his cud contently keeping an eye on all his friends..... tonight with me along side him, tickling behind both his ears....... happy boy!
After the trauma of dipping over the weekend..... even Dudley wasn't talking to Nigel... everyone has settled back to the usual routine...... Mitsie is looking positively silky..... with Bonny and Honey two sheerings from last year who are going to be introduced to Dudley in two weeks time are white as the driven snow.... they were one of the first lots to be dipped before the water got a big murky......

Its always nice to be able to share or swap some sort of skill or equipment to help out and yesterday a friend came to our assistance with his dipping tub... for sheep that is! ...... And we really do appreciate it!
Dipping sheep I'm reliably informed, clears and prevents all sorts of skin complaints which make sheep skin irritated and inflamed and soothes them making them feel lovely.. so its well worth doing if you can for their well being and condition... First thing I helped Nigel round up Mitsie and her gang and we brought them back, he dropped me off at home as I had to open the shop and left him to it...... I hadn't seen a dipping bath before, my only experience of one being the old "Thelwell" cartoon books... with the expressions on faces drawn with presumably suitable surprise...... so when he came back for me in the afternoon to collect Melody and all the gimmer lambs I was suitably alarmed with them...... We drove them round to the farm buildings and let them out of the trailer into the collecting pen..... Melody stayed close in unfamiliar surroundings, talking to me all the time, but was curious enough to go up to the bath for an inquisitive look..... oh dear... she was first in...... Nigel carefully reversed her into it... its deep enough to allow a sheep to swim.. and they all can.... then their heads get gently pushed under to cover every inch..... the thing that made me laugh was that they bob back up like ping pong balls, shooting out of the water before swimming along...... there must be so much air retained in their fleece that it make them float...... she was turned round to face in the opposite direction and when she reached the escape ramp at the other end, climbed out to drain...... she carried on talking to me...... I only wish I could have understood the actual words she used... but I have some idea!! Each lamb had a similar experience... with Jonty growling his way through it.. poor lad..... Tottie wasn't dunked... I couldn't bare it..... and she needed help to get out.. she's still only little.... When they were all done Melody came back and stood next to me and they were ecstatic to get back into the safety of the trailer and be returned home the familiar safety of their field...... I fed them as though nothing had happened...... as though it had all been a bit of a dream..... Tottie fell for it hook line and sinker...and immediately ate some nuts from my hand... Melody wanted some reassurance, as did Lottie and Megan...... but Jonty wasn't having any of it...... it'll take more than some nuts and love to bring him round!! New into Fabric of the Field this morning is one of Sarah's beautiful "Rubydoll" Clutch Bags in a bright Lime Green with an unusual swirly button over a magnetic clasp... They are knitted from local Wensleydale Wool and felted to size... perfect to accessorise a favorite outfit or something new for the coming Winter Season... pop in to have a look or take a look at the "Rubydoll" page! I've been busy making up all the cushions that I have woven over the last couple of weeks, and have been working against the tide... I've been selling them as fast as I can make them... This one in natural tones with Chenille highlights in Wine is one of the survivors... together with some others now showing on my page.. have a look and see.......... I've got enough warp to make another 3 or 4 and then on with the next warp.... I've been planning for some time and hope to start winding it next week with lots more products to follow during September and October.......... I love this bit.......... and I've just bought a book on 8 shaft patterning..... so when I've got my head round that there'll be no stopping me... a busy winter ahead......... yipee! |
